Hi all,

Just found this site and has a lot of info on here which I'm excited to go over over time. As for right now, I currently have a 55 gallon and just got a 125 gallon for christmas!
In terms of a filter, I already started a DIY wet dry with a 30 gallon sump. The issue is, I'm not sure what kind of pump to put in the sump. I know I want roughly 5x flow rate so somewhere around 700 gph. My questions are what brand should I lean toward, what should I steer clear of, and if possible something affordable.

Any other info would be greatly appreciated and any links to other threads would be awesome.

Thanks all!

A lot of people on here use DC pumps...won't comment on those...
I will recommend Eheim Compact series...super quiet...and the 1260 is like 900gph....and even more silent. I have been using Lifgard QuietOne pumps for years and they perform well....not silent but not loud...
Recently, I have been very happy with external pumps like Reeflow and Dolphin...even Eheim can be run external....I like external to save room in the sump...but external pumps are a little on the advanced side of return pumps and are plumbed differently....and some require electrical knowledge as the motors have to be wired...more for the big pumps...
I would go with a good quality pump...loke Eheim... Don't cheap out. The size you need wont be extremely expensive and the reliability is worth every penny.

I prefer DC pumps just for the added flexibility. I'd do some research on red dragon, deep blue, waveline, jabao, and even the newer from ecotech.

I run the waveline DC12000 and 10000ll. Very quiet. You could look at the 6000 for the turnover you're looking for. The nice thing is you can adjust flow as that will need will to vary once you are all plumbed.

The prices vary so select the one you like and willing to spend. I suggested waveline since use that with good results and middle of range price. My bro in law is using that plus deep blue and ecotech with good feedback too.

Thank you everyone. I'm looking into all the brands and looking at reviews too. If you all have any advice or links to other threads about wet drys that would be appreciated! Love what I'm reading here thank you again

Hi all,
Just decided on the eheim compact plus 3000. It's got the best reviews and the price matches with the quality from what I can tell. I'll make an overflow box from acrylic and more filter media going to the sump. Thanks all for the advice!
