K so i wanna get a wicked pump that does over 1000gph for under 100bucks ebay is a choice but i was also looking at sump pumps and bilge pumps.

The sump pump i was looking at feeds from the bottom and only needs 1/8" of water to run ( there would obviously be more )

http://www.simerpumps.com/asp/Product.asp?PId=331 is the pump the only thing i worried about is noise!!!

http://www.rule-industries.com/products/pumps/bilge_pumps/rule_1100/iid_244/index.htm This is the bilge i am looking at but also noise.

The builge is cheaper by about 60 bucks and is the same specs as the sump pump but i don't think it can run continously or it might die???

If anyone has used either and it has worked out tell me!!!! It will save alot of money.

All pumps produce heat when in operation and need a way to cool. Very few submersible pumps are able to run continuously when not completely submerged. Sump pumps in particular are not designed for use in fish tank sumps because they can not run continuously in the amount of water we are willing to give them. It will need to be always submerged or it will eventually burn out.

I designed a sump to use them but I burned two up due to letting the water levels drop. The other problem is they produce a lot of heat. They kept my tanks at 96 degrees.

I used to work at a boat yard.. Bilge pumps are meant to be used often, and it will burn out after a long time of use.. Just my 2 cents..

harbor freight pumps tend to go up in a puff of smoke (there was a thread like 2 months ago about this)

with pumps.. you get what you pay for... if the pump is made to be submerged.. it needs to be constantly fully submerged..

ive had good luck with homedepot pond pumps.. others have not...

I'm a fan of Rio's...

Any sump pump also runs the chance of leaking oil in the tank. Besides producing a lot of heat, they are loud and bulky.

Buying cheap pumps will only cost you money in the long run. Either they're going to burn out quickly, or they're going to kill you on the electric bill, or they're going to burn out when you're not paying attention, and kill your fish.

Spend the extra dollars right now, and save yourself the money and grief later.

For what it's worth, a Quiet one 4000 will pump 1017 GPH at 0 head height, and costs somewhere around 60-65 bucks. Works nicely in my sump, and it's a proven long term submersible pump.
