There seems to Be alot of controversy about whether restricting the return line with a ball valve is doing more harm to the pump than good. Others say it's no different than extra height . Which is it ? Should I be concerned if I'm restricting the return line to match the overflows drain capacity. At the moment , my pump is moving more water than my overflow can drain , resulting in a flooded tank.

Restricting the pump is just like adding head height to the pump. Your pump will be fine.

I've heard putting in a ball valve to restrict the flow is beneficial for the pump. I don't remember if its supposed to make the pump run more efficiently or if its easier on the pump in general. To be honest I wish I had a source to back that up but I don't remember were I read it.

restricting the pump with a ball valve is fine.. however a better option is to add a "T" as well as a ball valve to send some water back through the sump a secod time... this allows the pump to pump its little heart out without wasting any water...

Tip 4 -

4. If your pump is producing too much flow, you can reduce the flow by partially closing a
valve on the discharge line. Never restrict the inlet!!! Surprisingly, this will make the motor work
less and use less electricity!! This “valving back” simply causes the pump to operate further back
on its performance curve.
