Pump question

Is the term "head" on a pump the distance from the pump to the outlet in the tank or the total measurement of all of the piping?

Ex: If my stand is 3 feet and my tank is 2 feet would that be 5 feet of head or if the total measurement of the pipng that it takes to get from the pump to the outlet?

If its the second one I think I bought too small of a pump.

head is how far the water needs to be lifted.....but in a canister the lift is zero as its the difference of in and out

in a sump its from the top of the sump water to the the return

etc

there is a correction for the number of fittings and pipe size
