Hello I am in the beginning stages of building a pond. My question is what kind of turnover do i need for my pump? If my pond is in the 800 to 900 gallon stage what gph pump would i need. Any suggested brands? I'm am on a budget.

thanks

Max

yeah that would work but you really want atleast 1full turnover per hour and you will lose somme gph to the pressure being pumped up

With pumps you kind of get what you pay for. Cheaper ones are sometimes overrated on output and use much much more electricity than some of the name brand ones. Something I didn't believe until I experienced it first hand, several times due to my stubbornness and cheapness.

A pond is unlike a tank. In a pond you will have a lot of random gunk, roots, and leaves that get in it and will clog an in pond pump unless you build a good prefilter that wont clog. Some pumps come with better prefilters than others and some can handle and pump debris. Personally on a 1000g pond I would shoot for around 2500-3000gph pump. Depending on what your filter is comprised of and the 2 ft of verticle head you could loose several hunders gph. I didn't believe it, but a pump is really the very last element you need, build the pond and filter first, things will probably change along the way.

Ebay is a good place to watch for pumps if you can be persistant. I have picked up a 3 lagunas for under $50 each that I am happy with.

The maxflo lagunas are low power and are less likely to clog since their impeller can pass solids.

If you do go generic Harbor freight is about the cheapest daily price. You may get a month or 3 years out of them. A 1500gph is about $50.

Do you have an overall vision for the pond and timeline? Keep posting along the way!

Check craigslist or local pond/koi clubs for used pumps.

2K gph would be nice.

either one of these would be great you might need a 3 WAY DIVERTER too what filter r you using

pitiful head height on those, defiently overrated for the gph for actual use then and what a horrible price.

basically 4 times the cost of the laguna while using more power and producing less head.

why does everyone think that pumps should cost an arm and a leg?

http://cgi.ebay.com/Beckett-3500-GP...trkparms=65:12|66:2|39:1|72:1205|293:1|294:50

beckets are pretty nice this one has 23ft head while pushing 3560gph at 1ft of head and still having plenty of power at 10ft of head. power draw isn't listed though but typically for the gph beckets will run in the 270w range, higher than the laguna for sure, but pushing out more flow per heat height.

that being said for me I would run 2 laguna's to get higher performance for a similar intial cost and running cost. that also provides a redundant pump should the first fail for whatever reason (clogged, broken impeller, etc)

my primary pump is http://cgi.ebay.com/3250-GPH-Founta...trkparms=65:12|66:2|39:1|72:1205|293:1|294:50

17' 9" head 3250gph at 0 head and 155 watts consumption

my secondary is this

http://cgi.ebay.com/New-2110-GPH-Su...trkparms=65:12|66:2|39:1|72:1205|293:3|294:50

2100gph 13' head 125 watts

your right after TETRA sent me a free pump that my neighbor ran dry for a week or more no questions asked i like the company but'' not the best pump ''

I have a couple tetra hob's and they seem to work flawlessly but I think head height and efficiency aren't their forte.

all in all I'm kicking myself for not going with a couple of those lagunas that mrunlucky07 posted up. it would have saved me 70$ up from and come in a few watts less in the power rating while producing more gph. and when my pond build is on a budget, 70$ is alot.
