Pump Question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well, if you go out side of your tank, you will have to have at least one pump to return the water or to pump to the filter. You can use gravity to push the water in the other direction. Small pumps can be had for as little as ten bucks and sometimes five when they are on sale (Harbor Freight). Nothing says that you have to have brand new stuff either. Keep an eye on the classified ads, garage sales, Goodwill, and Craigslist.com.

What size tank do you have and what equipment do you have right now? An undergravel filter powered with an air pump is probably the cheapest and most reliable off the shelf system you can get.

I would invest in good quality pump if I were you just cuz they can really make or break your system. If it dies well...ur screwed, so you may as well start with a good one.

A 180g is considered a serious tank.

It is a tank and not a pond right?

For a tank it will need 1700-2000gph pump, depending on what kind of head pressure you have.

Used is good, but know what your getting and get it cheap. If you get used, have an extra one available. Some pumps are rebuildable too.

Ponds have a larger surface area for gas exchange and can make do with a lower flow rate.

If your filter can set right on top of the tank, that will give you the lowest head pressure and use gravity for return.

Where are you located on this rock?
