I need a new pump for my 540 Gallon freshwater tank. The tank is filled with large predator fish such as South and Central American Cichlids. For filtration equipment I have a wet/dry sump, and 3 Ocean Clear canister filters. I probably don't need the sump, but it's a good place to put my heater, and I can filter out the large waste so my canisters don't get clogged as quickly. The 3 canisters T off after the sump so that the water is divided 3 ways before merging to go back to the tank. My question is: how big a pump do I need, and what company makes a good one? I had been using a big 1.5 horse Dynamo pool pump that I got used for $20, but it's starting to leak, and it was LOUD! It also probably cost me a fortune in electricity. The filtration is in the basement, so the water has to get pumped up about 8 feet to get back to the tank. Thanks for the advise!

For something that larger you're probablly better off looking at pond pumps. Pool pumps may seem cheap at first but most use up greater than 1kw, some up to 2kw which is fine if you run it a couple hours a day in a pool, killer for a 24/7 setup.

I like the monsoon brand for pond pumps, have a 6100gph one that uses 520 watts, decent for that sized pump. It only cost me 200$ new. Check ebay, they sell them direct for much cheaper than is on the site.

the 4000 gph one would be ideal using low electricity while providing plenty of pumping power.

come to thing of it any decent brand pond pump at 4000gph would be ideal for you. Be that Laguna http://www.lagunaponds.com/lagunaeng/maxflopumps/maxflo4200.php?link=141

Reeflo hammerhead gold. Sick pump and it's quiet and has a 5yr warr.

I've heard that you can't go wrong with the Reeflo Hammerhead gold. I'll be buying one soon. How do you like the ocean clear canisters? I'm thinking about getting some for my setup. I'll also be running a sump, but wanted something to polish the water.

I use Wave pumps. Very quiet and energy efficient. I even got a filter cartridge hooked up to it.

I don't think you can go wrong with a Reeflo pump. They are quiet and very powerful. My Hammerhead pump has performed flawlessly for almost 5 1/2 years. I bought a replacement pump about 4 years ago which is still in its box. I chose to go with two Hammerheads on the new system we will be setting up. Will be using the one currently in use as a back up pump. I chose Hammerheads instead of Hammerhead Golds, because they are cheaper and have a little more "umph" than the Golds. They do, however, burn a little more electricity than the Golds. I am a Reeflo believer, and will be using five Reeflo pumps on our big set up. You definitely should check out the Reeflo line of pumps. They also make a commercial line of pumps that are incredible.
