Ok so once again i am in search of some help lol. How can you determine what pump size you should use? I have a 120 gal and the head form pump to return bulkhead is 52in. Im running a pump that came used with the tank but it just dose not seam to give me the current I'm looking for. Dont get me wrong i dont want to make a river current in there but a little more would be nice. I found a nice pump on CG for real cheap but i think 1225 at 3ft head is a little much for what im looking for, maybe not, so i turn to you guys?

 anyone?

What is the maximum flow rate on your overflow? What size tank? What types of fish? It's very difficult to answer your question without this information.

A little more info would help.
In lieu of that the quote below might help.

i have a 120 gal with a 5 3/4 5 3/4 over flow and i keep gar

What size, type and amount of overflows do you have?

Do you plan to run any other filtration to compliment this one?

Is the tank drilled or are you talking about a HOB type overflow box?
If so, is it a J-tube type or a "CPR" type overflow...
better yet post a clear image of your overflow.

This will determine the size of pump you'll be able to run or tell if you need to refit an overflow system to handle more flow that you're wanting...

For a 120g tank I personally would be shooting for at least 700gph on up to 1000gph, netting you right at 6 times to almost 8 times turnover rate per hour...;)

4.5+ feet of head seems like alot of vertical rise...Is that total length of hose/pipe or actual "A to B" height above the pump?

its a left side overflow box with the bottom drilled. Iv using 3/4 in tubing in a closed loop system with canister filters and a uv sterilizer, my return line is a bulkhead drilled on the same side of the tank as the overflow. The 52 in is from the bottom of the stand where my pump is, up to my return bulkhead. I will see if i can get some picks and post them.

By the way how do i know what my overflow can handle?
its 5 3/4 x 5 3/4 x 24 and im using 3/4 in tubing.
