My question is weather or not my sump pump will pump too fast for the wet/dry sump filter tank? This is my first setup I've done. I'm not sure if i get a pump that pumps too fast will the water flowing through my sump tank be able to keep up? I will be housing an Oscar and a Jack demsey in a 100gallon tank and i want to have a turnover rate of 10. Therefore i need a 1000GPH pump and want to check if it will work before i buy it.

use a ball valve on your return line to cotrol your flow. be sure you factor in your head height and your return line size when you choose your pump.

i understand "head" when reffering to pumps so that part is fine. As for the return line size, isn't it just going to be whatever comes off the pump i buy. Specifically, i'm looking at the supreme mag drive 1200 which is 3/4 off the outlet.

ihave a mag 12 if you read the paperwork that comes with it it says use 1 1/2" for best flow. i used a 3/4 to 1 1/2 adapter on the pump and plumbed the rest with 1 1/2 with a ball valve since the mag 12 would out run my over flow.i have my valve about 3/4 of the way open.

slightly different the one i have doesnt have the fractionating impeller and the inlet/outlet is 3/4". they sell them at drs foster and smith.

You should be fine to use the same size as the output of the pump.

What size overflow do you have? That will limit what size pump you will be able to use.

is there a way to calculate pump size based on overflow volume?

You just use the maximum water volume that the overflow can turn and go a bit below it for the pump. What size overflow tubing do you have?
