hey i am thinking of making a sump for the sake of it on my 10 gallon tank. it would be a 2-3 gallon sump. how do i match up a pump to the siphon flowrate? you all probably think im crazy. im not just i want to have this sump as a "practise" sump. it will probably have sand for filtartion and carbon. im also gonna build a stand for it.

I've got a 1' diy overflow in a 10 gal and it maxes out at ~20-25gph, currently running at ~16gph, if that gives you some indication.

Keep in mind the flow rate you will end up with at the head height you are using when choosing a pump, it will be far less than the listed max flowrate.

You don't match the pump to a siphon. You really don't use a conventional siphon at all (even though there is some siphoning that goes on in overflows).

When someone talks about a DIY overflow or HOB overflow, take it literally. They flow the water that the pump returns back into the tank. No more, no less.

As long as your overflow is rated higher than your pump, you'll be fine.

As long as your overflow (not syphon) can handle as much or more than your pump your ok.

Thay way it works is the overflow only flows out as much as the pump puts into the tank.

You may have trouble with flow if your using sand a medium.

What's the carbon for?, do you have water chemistry prob's ?

sniped again...rallysman what are you doing up?

"working" :D

carbon is for the sake of it really. no reason really. so if your overflows more than your pump wouldnt your sump "overflow".

no, because it can't flow more than your pump will return. Think of it literally as an overflow
