Ok I have a mag 9.5. It just fits my sump. However I did a rugf and it seams a little weak. Water is doing ok, I just expected more up flow from the rugf.

I have about a 6' head useing 3/4" the whole way. For returns, I have 2 x 1-1/4" doing most of the work, but cut back useing gate valves,, and one more 1-1/4" taking a little of the surface.

I was thinking of going to a mag 12, but I am seeing a lot more mag 18's FS. Would an18 be to much?

I am using about 1/2 of my return capabilities now. But I have built in to relieve pump ressure if nessasary.

see my setup here http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=262743&page=16

From what I read, you have three 1 1/4" overflow working on this tank. I come up with about 2811pgh is flow ability. Two of your overflows should be able to handle the flow of a Mag18. It would be good to have the third there in case one were to get plugged. I would say you would be fine using a Mag 18.

Thanks Pharaoh,

Are they the same size exteranally? I built my sump around the mag 9.5, so I only have a little clearance all the way around. Maybe 1" wider , 3" longer would be most that would fit.

I think the increase in pressure would aide the rugf setup as well. I have noticed a lot more mag 18's for sale then 12's. so I was hoping that would be the answer.
