Pumpkinseed Sunfish in CA

I just caught this guy a few weeks back in San Jose on a small jig.

I thought it was a bluegill at first but then I see the pretty lines on it's face. Are there any pumpkinseeds in CA?? Is it a pumpkin?

Hmm, it looks like a Green to me. The pumpkinseeds that we catch in MD usually have much more vibrant blue lines on there whole body, instead of just the head/face like that one.

Looks like a green to me also, I caught one of them and a couple of bluegills that I have in my tank with an Oscar, JD & frontosa. They are doing real good and eating well. No problems getting along with other fish in the tank.

Are Green sunfish native to CAlifornia?

They are not natives but both the pumpkinseed and the green sunny are well established in California. The range there of the pumpkinseed is a bit spotty but the green is found thrthe state except in the higher mountain areas. Pumkinseeds tend to be more colorful throughout there body.

I was using a jig tipped with the bottom part of the gary yamamoto kreature.
But what else will they hit? I noticed he had a huge mouth for a sunfish..

Will they go for bobber/piece of nightcrawler set-ups?
Or will the bluegill take them.

Bobber with a piece of nightcrawler will get you tons of panfish. JEAE21 check your pm, I live in San Jose as well, and am a die hard fisherman.
