hey, so i was wondering what the deal is with pumps. I need one for my 150/75 SW tank that may have another 100g tub attached to it. Noise doesnt matter as the 75 sump and tub would be in a different room downstairs. I waslooking at a pump from Big Als which is my lfs, they are very respectful where i am located. I need the pump to pump about 1500gph at 6-8ft but for that size pump i would need to spend over $500 where as if i bought a pump from Canadian Tire, it costs around $100. why are fish pumps so much more expensive than normal pumps, whats so bad with normal pumps that they can't be used for aquariums? (i know that some pumps contain metal parts that can rust from SW and polute your tank but what about the ones without metal parts?)

has anyone here ever used normal pumps for Sw aquariums instead of pumps made specifically for fish tanks?

i prefer march mag drive pumps but they are $$$

march pumps
no seal to leak
fw or sw
dont add a lot of heat
seem to run 24/7 for many years

cheaper pumps
material compatibility
seal to leak
add to much heat
use more energy
unknown life span

my 2 cents

The quiet one 14000 pumps 1500 gph at 25 feet head.At 10 feet, they flow almost double that. They are very quiet and about $300 from Dr. foster and smith. I haven't had mine long enough to determine durability, though.:D
Rally knows a lot about this stuff. He would be able to help you.

sequence reeflo dart i just paid around 240 shipped. pumps more than enough water, quietest pump ive seen. it cost more than some pumps, but uses about half the electricity and dead reliable. 3 yr. warranty.
