my young male nyererei isnt looking so great today. instead of begging for food like the others, hes hiding in the back. He lost all his color and seems to be yawning alot, almost coughing it looks like. Id hate to lose him and im wondering if i should move him because all the other fish seem fine. Any ideas what could be wrong with him?

Sounds like bloat to me. I would separate him from the others and treat the food you give him with Metronizole. I treat a 75g with 1.5tsp twice a day (just adjust according to your tank size). Take a cup and get some water out of the tank, stir in the metro, then stir in the food, let it soak for a few minutes then dump it in the tank. Remove any chemical filtration on the hospital tank. If you can't find Metro you can use Clout.

+1

The "coughing" behavior is THE telltale sign for bloat IME. If the fish is not eating, you can try metro in the water, but clout may be needed at this point. You can try some epsom salt too. Keep a close eye on the others as well. Moving the affected fish is a good start, rather than treating the entire tank

I just noticed the replies thanks for the advice guys. I added aquarium salt and he's doing fine now he has his color back and is eating again. I'll know what it is if this ever happens again now. Is it common for vics to get bloat?

well, he was doing well for a couple days but today he was worse than ever. The pet store was closed so I moved him to a 20 gallon and changed the water, mixing about 5 tablespoons of epsom salt in. any other tips? Is that enough epsom salt? I couldnt find any solid information on how much to mix in.
