with as expensive as they are is that something you want to chance?
but i was at a LFS who was keeping them with Altums and different dwarfs. The tank was well planted. So it is possible, but not something i want to try with as expensive as they are around here ($30 a pop)
You do realise how big Redline Torpedo Barbs get right? You could keep them safely with most medium and maybe even large sized SA/CA Cichlids. Anything up to 12" shouldn't be able to catch or eat them provided they aren't a highly predatory fish like Parachromis.
Absolutely no chance of an Altum or any Dwarf Cichlid getting one. I imagine most Cichlids will just ignore them. Not a possibility of food and not a Cichlid, that's what most of them will do.
We keep a bunch in our big display at work with some mellower African cichlids (peacocks, yellow labs, Fronts, etc) and American cichlids (Nics, Geos, Bps).
Bear in mind that they aren't truely a tropical fish - they like cold water for a good part of the year. I have a group in my coldwater goldfish tank that are thriving. They're in with :
goldfish
plecos
golden barbs
assorted corys
dojo loaches
a few ditherfish - hatchets and a tetra
a whole lotta snails
I've never had any agression problems. They do like cover tho, as someone said before, and a cooler planted tank would be their ideal set up imo.
I've heard that they're being captive bred at the moment, but I'm not sure how true that is (heard it from a friend). They're endangered in the wild. Anyone else have any info on this?
