Hello,
I Just Purchased a male Jack Dempsey, about a week ago. He is living fine in my 55 with my Female convict and Pleco. He is about 2 to 2 and half inches long, wondering how old he is?

Also it seems that there are eggs in a piece of drift wood I put in tank, cant see, but convict is attacking Dempsey when he gets to close and seem to always win the fight, I guess God made all women alike. ;))

Are Male Dempsey not supposed to be around eggs during the hatching period and when fry are out to protect fry?
Thank you
Stephen

Welcome to the forum.
First of all its kind of impossible to predict the age of your jack Dempsey even knowing his size.
Cichlids will grow at different rates depending on many factors like diet, temperature, tank size, water conditions and maintenance of the tank and filtration.

Are you sure your JD is a male?
You don't need to have a male and a female for a female cichlid to produce eggs.
If the convict and the JD have not formed a true pair bond, the convict will only see the JD as a threat to the eggs and will try her best to keep him away. In a 55 gallon tank he won't be able to get far enough away to satisfy the convicts parental instincts and she will get nasty.

My advice would be to rehome the JD.
I think they grow a bit big to stay in a 55.
I would perhaps find your convict a male convict to pair up with.
You will get lots of babies to the point you are over run with them.
I would add a shoal of Buenos Aries tetras to help keep the fry numbers down.

Hope this helps.
