My brother has been looking at upgrading his 100 gallons tank to a bigger one. He found a 240 gallons saltwater tank for $500 that was used in a display home. The tank looks good (custom-made with canopy, stand, light and sump) and is no longer used (just sitting in the garage of the home display). It's an acrylic tank and has been running for less than 1 year. The lady selling it says it cost her company over $3000 to order it and have it maintained. We have never setup sump-filtration system and always used canister. We were wondering if it was safe to convert this tank to a freshwater and what type of cleaning would need to be done. He has indo/ntt datnoids, a pleco and a few clown loaches. I understand the tank will need to be cycled but is there any other risk? My brother would hate to throw his fishes and wake up the next morning with them dead. I advised him to buy a few mollies/guppies and used them as test rats before making the official switch. Any suggestion? I will try to post pics of the tank from my brother.

I just did this with my 210. It was a reef setup. Now fw.

Lotsa elbow grease and vinegar for corraline algea. I ran a ton of carbon in the sump for a few days after I filled it.

I've converted used tanks from sw to fw, myself, but only glass. A razor blade was the best tool on glass, for acrylic, I'm not sure you can use that. I would go with the vinegar and elbow grease. Just let the vinegar sit for a few hours and do it's work, and then move to the next side and submerge that in vinegar, and continue till you've hit all sides. SW tanks are a pain in the arse to clean. I feel for you, man, especially with a tank that size to clean.
