where can i purchase pure ammonia that i can use to cycle my tank?

Hardware stores and dollar stores usually carry "pure" ammonia....just check the label. Also be aware that ammonia comes in different concentrations. The ammonia we used to fishless cycle our tank was quite dilute, so we had to add a lot to our tank to get an ammonia reading of 4 ppm.

walmart is where i was told to buy it.... i just threw some shrimp in my tank and let them rot does the same thing

ok, i got mine at the Pig...the only ammonia they had at walmart was loaded with suffrectants soooo i put it back...the one i bought had no ppm reading on it so how can i tell how dilute it is if at all any?

Get a gallon of water and add 5 drops of ammonia. Test the water for ammonia. If you use API's Master Freshwater Test Kit, add enough drops of ammonia to get a reading of 4 ppm.

If you have really concentrated ammonia, 5 drops might be too much. Start over with another gallon of water and add 3 drops of ammonia and retest. Just count the number of drops it takes to get an ammonia reading of 4 ppm.

When we cycled our tank, our ammonia was very dilute, so it took a lot--we had to add 132 ml of ammonia to our 300 gallon tank to get a reading of 4 ppm.

Once you know how much ammonia it takes to get a 4ppm reading in one gallon of water; you can figure out how much you need to add to your tank to get a 4ppm reading.

Here's a good article on fishless cycling:

I suggest that you keep a record of the readings of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate and how much ammonia you add each time. After adding ammonia, retest and record the new ammonia reading. Here's a copy of the record sheet that I used:
