The only ones I have seen for sale are what I assume to be hybrids, usually marked down as "Florida Gar" or "Hybrid Alligator Gar," and I guess they aren't really lying but does anyone know where I can buy TRUE long nose, short nose, spotted, and/or alligator gar? I currently have a 12-incher who was sold to me about 6 months ago as a baby alligator gar, then I thought it was a spotted, but after doing more research I discovered he's a Florida.

Dont quote me on this but i thought most gars are wild caught? I couldnt see there being too many hybrids. Yea some of them look very similar but i doubt there are many hybrids floating around. A lot of the online stores sell gator gars though.

I've got all of the above i could possibly part with. But if you're looking to get some at a small size, catching them yourself is your best bet.uploadfromtaptalk1425434371220.jpguploadfromtaptalk1425434317626.jpguploadfromtaptalk1425434338891.jpguploadfromtaptalk1425434295358.jpg

Yeah I was sort of looking for some littler guys, I live in Michigan though and we do have alligator gar in the Detroit river but I think they're invasive and next to impossible to catch so I guess I'll have to come up with another plan

You probably don't have alligator gar that far North. I think they only live in the southern states. But I'm sure you have longnose spotted and shortnose. We have them here in Northern Indiana.

Yeah I guess you're probably right, I guess the term "alligator gar" is used a little more loosely by local michigan fishermen.

It's used loosely everywhere. I tell people I've got an Alligator Gar around here in SE Tennessee and the first thing I get is " Yeah, we got them here. I've seen them in the river every time I go fishing". I usually say yes I'm sure you saw a gar, but it was a Longnose or Spotted Gar, because they are not native to here. Then they want to argue with me about it. A guy at work earlier this year just wouldn't believe that they weren't here, because his "daddy" said that's what kind they wuz!!! I ended up betting my paycheck against his on it. I told him that I was going to prove it to him and leave no doubt in his simple mind that they were absolutely NOT native to SE Tennessee. Well, long story short, he signed over his check to me after I showed him 3-4 maps showing that about 250 miles or so was how far he was gonna have to drive his "daddy" to even get close to seeing one in the wild that was naturally occurring and not stocked. I'm his Damn "DADDY" now. Lol!!!

My LN GAR will be spawning in late April and babies are going to be ready at about the 15th of May or so. I have a thread on it here at MFK. PM me if you want to get on the list. Thanks.

I breed spotted gar as well. I may be able to help.

Most gars - if not all, that are generally available are NOT hybrids. They are just called the wrong names, but are still purebred.
For example the Alligator Gar that turned out to be a Florida, is a pure Florida, not a hybrid.

I am looking for a Shortnose, if one of you guys can hook me up.
Thanks!
