i bought a 250ml bottle of purigen and used about 100ml for a 55g tank. i think it absorbed some of the discoloration after 24 hours. i planned on using half now as when i need to recharge it i can just swap it out for the left over thats still in the bottle.

since its a smaller dose of purigen it would get saturated faster and would need to recharge it faster. right? im thinking of using the whole 250ml and let it do its thing faster and hoping it takes 2.5 times longer until it saturates. right?

what im basically saying is

small amount of purigen= slower impurity absorption and faster saturation.
larger amount of purigen= faster impurity absorption and longer saturation time.

its in the same tank and i know 100ml covers 100g.

Your logic is correct. I use 500 ml on my 90 gallon and it takes 4-6 months for saturation. Usually I recharge it every 6 months and sometimes its not even fully darkened. So yeah the more you use the longer it lasts as a whole.

thats great news. now i just need a better bag. ive got red dots in my sump media

oops , I would either buy "The bag" from seachem to put your purigen in or find a 130 micron bag or the smallest pore sized you can find or that can happen. You said your purigen turned reddish ?

i did a diy ghetto holder but it failed and some got out. i just straight wrapped it in 2 ply of tee shirts that was held in by a regular holder.

yes it turn a reddish color. pink/red.

interesting . . . typically I see my Purigen turn a sort of tan color first, and then eventually a dark brown

maybe your fish food uses a lot of carotenoids (?) or some other color-enhancers that have a lot of red in them . . .

I try to use about 100ml of Purigen per 30G of tank volume . . . you can buy Purigen in pre-bagged 100ml packages, for about $8/bag . . .

i was thinking it was the food i feed. the food is red and the fish poop is red so.... red beads. i know the 100ml came with a bag but i just wanted to test out the 250. im glad i did. i switch 100ml to the whole 250ml. 100ml after 24 hours did a fair noticeable color difference. but when i made the thread i switch to 250ml and it did the same amount of work but in about 2-3 hours after the 100ml absorbing. 250ml after 20 hours is pretty darn clear. glass green clear

the food. mostly red but some green

I put 250ml of purigen in my 2 emp 4oo filters. I didn't get the bags, just used an old nylon from the wife and it held great. So far so good, but I recenlty added a piece of drift wood to the tankt and that made it cloudy, but the purigen hasn't removed it all.

good luck

after 2 weeks of use in a t shirt it broke down. i saw that it was breaking and pulled it out before the specks can get loose. cant believe the bacteria melted a t shirt.
