DIY Purigen reactor

Info on Purigen as well as the best price I've seen. Seachem Purigen

I used an inline, standard house filter, 500 ml of Purigen, some blue bonded filter pad cut to size and stuffed in the top of the filter, and 3/4" PVC and a fitting. I'm running the filter backwards from it's design so that the water flows down through the PVC and then up through the purigen. I cut the blue fliter pad to fit in the top of the filter to keep the purigen from overflowing out of the filter. I've had this in service for a month now, with a bit of tweaking here and there.

Very nice! I did something similar with a Phosban 550 and a rena xp1. I've since changed it up a bit putting the Purigen in the canister and filling the reactor with denitrate. Dropped the flow to about 50gph throughout the reactor and tested after leaving my dad in charge of the tank for a week.....he's pathetically heavy handed when feeding. Tested on the 7th day and had 0 nitrates.
I'm going to test again after another month to see if it actually stays there, but I might have stumbled on something. Time will tell

I use Purigen on all my tanks. Lasts forever and has tremendous filtration capabilities.

Today, I tested the tank before a water change.
\
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate less than 5 ppm
pH 7.0

I'd say it's working...
