People seem to have pretty strong feelings for or against a product, Is purigen really THAT much better than a good grade of carbon, For instance do they not really remove the same organics and doe purigenREALLY lower NITRATES or just removes organic matter like carbon before they are converted to NITRATE? and do they not both remove the same yellowing substances tthat improve water quality and clarity/ So what if one can be regenerated the time involved to do so to me really does not make we want to use one over the other , costs ??? really an improvement or not, Please do not chime in and SAY I do not even use Carbon AS I BELIEVE good carbon and POLYFILTERtm has ALWAYS ALLOWED ME to have healthy and successful tanks, Please chime in though about Purigen, what is so magical about it over carbon OR POLYFILTER NOT POLYFIBER.

The advantage of using purigen is that it can easily be recharged by soaking in bleach overnight. You can recharge carbon, but you need extremely high heat to do so. So cost wise you can continue to pay more for carbon and poly filter or buy purigen and recharge it. All three products work.

Thanks I knew that I am asking DOES PURIGEN REMOVE THING S THAT CARBON OR POLYFITER DOES NOT < I BELIEVE THEY ALL remove THE SAME BUT POLFITER ALSO REMOVES METALS AND ANTIBIOTICS AFTER TX IS DONE, Purigen does not DO THAT!

What are you trying to remove? Like the other post said purigen can be recharged, to a point, carbon lasts 6 days effectively, and you'll get maybe 50% back with the oven recharge method for once recharge.

No I dont think purigen removes anything more than carbon does, but it is more efficient and lasts longer.

Purigen removes more than carbon. Carbon basically is a chemical filter. It doesnt remove protiens and other organics that a synthetic polymer filter is designed to remove. That being said, however, pound for pound carbon is cheaper. Carbon will remove some things a polymer wont, like odor, but unless you are trying to remove things like arsenic, which is present in many municipal water systems, very low concentrations hopefully, you will be far more pleased with a synthetic polymer resin.

Thanks But Honestly I think I will go w polyfiter and carbon, polyfilter tM is around A LONG TIME reomves just about everything and changes colors when done and you done have to mess w small beads and all the mess and time that would take, Plus on other forums like Reef central matrix carbon and ROX carbon get rave reviews from the reefers

Personally, if properly maintained, carbon and other chemical absorbing media is really just expensive insurance that sometimes can give a false sense of security. Fish are hardier than people realize and filtering their water to the extreme, even making them live in RO water is sometimes detrimental to fish. My experience with carbon has always been a positive but un-neccessary step in filtering a tank. I have seen the negatives as well and on this site you will generate a good argument both for and against carbon and Purigen.
Good husbandry is our responsibility and if carbon filtration is something you feel you need, filter away.
BTW, marine forums here and elsewhere will also debate the pros and cons of carbon. Marine environments are far more prone to upset than the freshwater equivalent tank. Carbon in the marine arena is usually meant as a target solution to a specific issue like heavy metal toxicity and once the issue is resolved not used long term. Again, this will be a debatable issue, so I caution against basing the use of a specific water treatment on what you read in forums. Find out for yourself.

While i agree to a point I have 30 yrs experienc e with marine tanks and chemipure and skimming are always on my tanks with polyfilter , so I can provide the animals with the very best quality water in a closed environment, maybe not everyone agress but the long term results prove to me they work, PERIOD.
