Hello,

My purple Ery wolf is always hiding and I was wondering if they absolutely need hiding spots. The tank is bare bottom with two large pieces of driftwood and all it does it hide behind the driftwood or behind indian almond leaves all day until night time (it only comes out in the dark).

Ive seen youtube videos of purple wolves that come out and swim freely and is not skittish at all, but mine seems to be really skittish.

ammonia, nitrite, and nitrates are in check. Nitrates are usually at most 20-40ppm. Sides and background are all blacked out (tank used to house a payara and I darkened the sides to prevent it from flying across the tank in fear).

Do they absolutely need hiding places, or can i take out the driftwood? Its been about a week since I acquired it.

Wolf is roughly 5in
tankmates include a bristlenose pleco and a small bumblebee catfish.

ive had bichirs in the past that always hide, but once i took out the driftwood they were fine and actually started swimming all over the tank without hesitation. I was wondering if taking out the driftwood will have the same effect on my wolf?

It'll probably hide among the leaves. But if it's a new fish then let it have time to settle. Eventually it'll get more bold and be active. I would leave the driftwood in and watch it.

Usually will get more bold and swimin open water. Wait it out.

ooo ok, so ill just wait it out. I actually took out the pleco yesterday. I figured the pleco was stressing the wolf and I hear stories of plecos sucking slime coat off fish that stay put all day, and my wolf just kinda lays on the ground all day.

Hopefully without other tankmates it will get comfortable sooner. I like the Ery wolf cause they typically cruise around the tank like a big blimp compared to the hopilas ive seen

It should be alright with the pleco. Issues happen with other fish and pleco due to the pleco not been fed well. Keep the feeding down to evey other day and it'll be active.
