I'm looking into getting a one of those square poly-tanks to make a mega tank out of, and i want to install a window on the side of it, nothing huge, maybe 20x20". I'm looking for ideas on how to install it.. i was thinking about drilling holes in both the window and tank( i plan on using acrylic) and using a spare peice of 45 mil epdm pond liner, and basically make a gasket out of it, sandwich the pond liner gasket between the tank and window. using several stainless steel bolts to bolt it on. does that sound like it would work? or what if i did the same thing, but exept instead of the pond liner, use silicone? any ideas would be appreciated!!

they have some tanks with windows already in them look in the DIY and pond sections

i know, but there mega expensive. ive searched through the pond and diy sections but havent found anything

I'm not sure how well pond liner would work. You could probably use silicone as a gasket, but it's not going to adhere to poly very well and could possibly leak down the road. I would try out an array of types of silicone and try to find one that would actually stick to poly before you go cutting any holes.

I've wanted to do this too, let me know if you find anything that works

I would scratch al that. The tubs are allready water proof. And fish safe oviously. So im sure that there is a product that bounds to the poly or what ever those tubs are made out of. And will bond to the acrylic to. So just take a jig saw and cut the hole in the tub you need. Maybe like two inches less on each side on the tub then the acrylic sheet. Take the bounder put it around the edge of the tank inside and press the window on face down. And either use some kind of clamps. Or point some pieces of wood inbetween to brace it untill it dries. And it should be water proof and fish safe. I have used this http://www.lowes.com/pd_20934-69-11...cktite&pl=1&currentURL=/pl__0__s?Ntt=locktite on filters, and to glue stuff like rocks together, or rocks to slate ect. And its strong as all hell. And fish safe. The guy at my local fish store uses it under water in his reef tank to glue corals to rock. So im pretty sure You could use this. http://www.lowes.com/pd_100575-69-1...cktite&pl=1&currentURL=/pl__0__s?Ntt=locktite
for larger scale to bound both the window, with the tank. Im sure the pro's on here will tell you what to do. This is my two cents. Good luck

i was thinking about useing that "pl roof and flashing" caulk, it says it bonds to poly, but i dont know if it bonds to acrylic

what about using the stuff they attach widshields to cars then a silicone layer to keep that from contacting the water, the windshield stuff is flexable and never hardens fully so will hold up to the stress of water changes aslo is increadibly strong

correct me if i'm wrong but the silicone shouldn't have to stick to the poly , if you apply silicone to your'e acrylic get it nice and smooth and an even thickness and let it almost set would it not work like a gasket when the window is bolted on ??
