putting driftwood in a fish tank?

i want a large center peace but i have support beams on the top of the tan that are 3' apart (standard 180 gallon aqueon glass aquarium) would i be able to lower the water level take the top off that has the beams on put the wood in then put the top back on???

i would try doing that to an empty tank since you will have to silicone the tops back when you're done..

Don't try and remove the frame. It will crack. Empty the tank, then cut a section out of one of them at the desired length, and screw it back together with a little silver plate.

be sure to use stainless hardware. I used plumbers strap when I broke one of my supports.
