I just got my first monster tank today - a 300 gallon tank, and have a question for you guys and gals...

I bought this tank, because I have some gars, and a Wels catfish, that will need it at some point. The gars are between 10 and 15 inches, and are in a 75. They are pretty crowded in the 75, which is obviously why I got this big tank - BUT, my concern is, I have heard about gars breaking their backs in bigger tanks.
Should I stock the 300 with most of my assorted smaller fish, and divide the gars up among my three 75's? OR will the gars be okay ? I'm not quite what circumstances lead to most gars breaking their backs to begin with - so I don't want that to happen to me.

Thanks!

they will be ok I had a 9" in my 300 before

What I've read (on here) is that in BIGGER tanks, they are more likely to break their backs, because they can build up speed and smash into the side.

yes this is true but only when they are young about 9" and below. A 12" to 15" gar will do well in a 300 gallon tank. Speaking from research and experience.

The gars will be just fine. They have a greater chance of breaking their backs in a smaller tank!!

This is false please read the stickies in the gar Forum.

What type of Gar BTW?

Mrwinkle - that link takes us to some other website.

I did not know that the "brokeback" syndrome was only for smaller / younger gars. Good to know.

I own one each, of all true gars, EXCEPT for a true spotted gar, which I'm trying to get as well. One of them, the Florida, is still small and is not with the others, and is staying in his 30 gallon tank.

Thanks guys!
