hi, been lurking for a while now figured i make my first post. i've just acquired a 210g and its going to sit in the living room. my question is, has anybody here ever had the sump sit in the basement? and if so, what kind of pump can travel up the height to the tank? im thinking at least 12-14ft up. thanks

You can either use a pump designated as "high head" or you can put the sump on a shelf near the ceiling beneath the tank. High head pumps are more expensive than regular head pumps, so expect that when you're looking at prices. Don't be fooled into thinking that a regular head pump of higher capacity could do the job. If not specifically designed for high head applications, the life of the pump will be shortened greatly.

As others have said put it on a stand as close to the ceiling as you can in the basement. Even with the need to leave some space to work in the sump you should be able to get head height down to 8 to 10 feet without an issue. Still will need a heck of a pump, but doable.

Yeah...thats gonna have to be one big-*** pump! Personally, I would either find a way to put the sump in the stand or just go with 1 or more canister filters. You could probably get 2 used FX-5's for the cost of that pump alone. After the pump, you would still be on the hook for all the $$ required to build & plumb the sump. Not really cost-effective if you ask me, but crazier things have been done.

I did this years ago but as discussed put the sump just below the floor, raised on shelves to minimize the size of pump I'd need and increase the flow rate. It works, no big deal.

Put the sump on a shelf around 5ft to take of half of the head. then get a pump that is for high head. if you use a normal pump itll burn out faster because it is not built for that much restriction. go to home depot and get a really powerful pump gor like 2000gph. and itll probubly be around 1500gph after head loss. thats around 7x turnover.

thats all for the replies. the pump he gave me is a mag drive pump model 24. its rated at 2400 at 1ft., 2000 at 3ft., 1800 at 5ft., 1400 at 9ft. max hight at 20ft. and the inlet/outlet are 1". im planning on raising the sump up higher so the travel hight would be closer to the tank. does that sounds good? thanks all

So what is the flow rate at 12ft? You lost 1000gph from 1ft to 9ft, so I'm not sure its gonna be enough for a 210g by itself...
