I have seen a lot of how to's regarding the DIY pvc overflow, but I haven't seen the explicit directions on how to install the air valve. Am I missing something?

I don't use one in my setup. I unplug the pump [simulate pwr failure] to use the power for other things once a week at least and i haven't lost suction yet.

But i would assume you just drill a hole and stick it in with a bunch of silicone.

yep, just drill a hole and silicone it into the overflow.

"so if there is no air valve then how will you prime it"

I just filled it up...outside with a hose, then placed it in the tank.

It hasn't needed repriming, yet...
