OK, so I understand how they work, but I didn't read anywhere how deep into the tank they such go.

If I have a 180g 72"x24"x24", should the overflow go all the way down to the bottom of the tank??

yes. not only does it help with flow, but it also helps to stabilize it.

no problem.

i have a couple recent threads on overflows w/ some problems I ran into that you might wanna look at

OK, I have the overflow made. Next question

The old overflow was in the middle of the tank, so the hose to the sump is already a set length. I would like the new overflow to be in the corner. Can I just add hose to make it longer and leave the sump and return line in the same place? I guess I am wondering if the longer drain line will keep up with the old return line.

Thanks

You will be fine to extend it. shouldn't notice a thing.
