Are PVC pipes dangerous - chemically or otherwise - to fish? I would imagine not, since most are meant for plumbing, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. For example, the outer coating might be different than the inner coating.

no just clean 'em

They are if you swing 'em like a baseball bat. Otherwise, no. :)

I like to sand the outside of the pipes, I like the matte look and I hate the red writing. Japes is right, sand the cut ends to smooth them if you are using them as caves.

Thanks for the information. I know a lot of people had funny replies, but when it comes to my pets, I like to take things as seriously as possible, since their lives are at stake. I asked the guy at Home Depot and he was unable to say whether the outside was safe, but the inside was assumed to be because PVC pipes are commonly used for plumbing. Just had to be sure. I have sanded edges and the barcodes away so nothing is sharp.

Sorry about that first post. It is a valid question, I was just being silly.

PVC is a very safe material. If you glue it you should definitely wait a day or two (longer is better) for a full cure of the cement. People have said that ABS is fine as well. I'm pretty sure it is fine for aquarium use, but it isn't rated for potable water here in the U.S.

I don't know of any type of plastic that is going to affect your water quality, as long as it isn't coated with antimicrobial chemicals or something.
