Just a question, is general PVC piping safe to use in an aquarium? I'd guess so, as long as it hasn't been used for anything else, but what about chemical compositionwise, etc.?

yup, its safe for drinking water so its safe for aquarium use. The same goes for PVC cement.
Almost every DIY job contains PVC, so it's proven to be ok

yup... my whole w.d is pvc

Its inert and designed for all types of water. There are different types of pvc pipe for pressure ratings though so be aware if you want to use it some other time.

As for the tank I use terracotta unglazed open drain pipes, fish love them, plants love them and Only the biggest fish can move them around. Severums also love spawning on them.
