Do you generally install check valves throughout and have you had any issues with them (ie do they clog)? Do they restrict flow? Having had a few floods, I am trying to cover my bases on my new tank. Thanks

Ive never used any. There are different styles, some have a little flap, some have a little ball. If I'm not mistaken the swinging flap style offers more resistance. But I'm not sure.

As they get old and accumulate detritus and algae they are less effective. This is more of a concern for saltwater.

I've always either utilized a siphon break drilled into the return plumbing or positioned the return where it was high enough up that it couldn't back drain much water, and if it did, the sump could accommodate it.

Imo relying on a check valve to prevent a flood is almost as dangerous as not utilizing one in the first place. Design the plumbing so its failsafe.

I have used PVC check valves (ball type) under in-line heaters to prevent the line from siphoning dry during power outages. Also to prevent back siphoning of media in fluidized bed filters. The lines and valves should be periodically be brushed out to prevent detritus buildup, but this seems to me to be part of any regular maintenance to keep flow stable anyway.
I usually put a union connector close under them to make maintenance easier.
Check valves can also prevent back siphon-age into sumps to prevent an overflow, if you like to have a fairly full sump (like I do)
