I realize this isn't exactly groundbreaking stuff, but I took the pictures so I might as well post it.

I needed new strainers for my 1" outlets. I didn't want to wait a week or pay shipping for $2.97 worth of fittings, so I got out some pipe and went to work. They work well and I haven't had to fish a tetra out of the sump since I installed them. :)

The cut in the bottom makes them easy to slip in and out of the socket.

It is pretty much the same as the store-bought ones (black strainer in first photo). The water level may be 1/8" higher, hard to tell. The strainers I had were cut out for more flow. It used to be a reef tank and the strainers gunk up FAST.

I use a circular drop saw and cut a series of thin slits instead of multiple holes. Its much faster and easier, especially if you have to do a few hundred.

I thought about that, but I didn't want to do it inside (too much to clean up) and we've got a foot of snow outside!
