Is PVC pipe ok to use in tanks for hidding places or is it going to release chemicals in the water?

It is fine. Looks tacky, but sometimes its a quick solution to make hiding places for fish getting pick on.

i have pvc in almost all of my tanks, and will be all of them. they are great for clown loachs and eels, it makes them feel safe and less stressed out. I reccommend it for some fish, and it does kind of look tacky... but hey, whatever works right?

Tacky can look cool sometimes. My friend owns a "junk" tank. Twigs, beer bottles, and a mess of other stuff.

It is safe. Not the prettiest thing neccessarily, but effective and cheap.

I forgot to mention that I was talking about the Black PVC!

Like others have said, safe and very functional for hiding spots.

You can place the PVC on the tanks glass floor then pile the substrate over and around it to make it much more kidden with only the openings visible.
