Pygocentrus cariba

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
other cariba and other of the smaller shoaling P's, sometimes exodons...not too many choices

I'm far from an expert, but I don't think you could keep more than 3 or 4 in a 90 for life and generally, you should have at least 4

from the sticky (quote):

Scientific Name: Pygocentrus cariba
Common Names: Cariba Piranha, Black Shoulder/Black Ear Piranha
Distribution: The Rio Orinoco lowland basin and the Llanos region in Venezuela
Size: 12 inches (Captive), 14 inches (Wild)
Captivity: Although 20 gallons per cariba is used, many recommend 25 gallon each due to their aggression. As a shoaling fish, it is recommended that they be kept in at least groups of four. A powerful and efficient filtration system is needed. A temperature of 24-30C, and pH of 5.5-7.5 is required.
Personal Comment: Known to be very aggressive by all standards, including amongst themselves. They are also a lot less skittish than nattereri if put in the correct conditions.

so i cant keep it just one i need a group of 4
you can keep one, some people just don't think it's right/fair to keep schooling fish as singles.

any pygos. ie: caribe, ternetzi, nattereri. 1 is fine. try to avoid 2 but it can be done. 3 and up is fine as well.

I'd say you just keep a pack of caribe..They look real cool by themselves..I'm just not a fan of mixing all diff. pygos together..

i would buy more but damn itz cost me like 63 bucks for one the fish it self cost not that much but the shippin like 38 bucks maybe ill get it later so u think 4 will be fine for life in 90g and u cant keep one in 55g for life right?

some words of advice...

change your location... p's arent exactley legal where you are.. and here people go with the get a shoal idea.. piranha school for defensive reasons not for hunting.. they are SOLITARY and aggressive.. they just happen to tolerate other fish in the wild and in captivity if enough room is present.. your 90 idea should support ideally 4 or less fish.. especially caribe.. they get very large and are THE most aggressive pygo, by specie anyway. and he will grow fast.. solitary pygos in captivity tend to be skittish and less aggressive then their serrasalmus counterparts.. but since yours is so small you should have no problem cracking his shell (so to speak ) and having him be very aggressive.. if you want this caribe to be flawless and a show stopper i say grow him out by himself feeding him nothing but the best foods and give him the best water quality.. like i do with the fish in my avatar.. goodluck man hes gunna be a monster someday soon.. more then those wolves you were looking for!
