Okay so I found a piece of glass in my house about 76"x24" and 10mm thick. I am unsure whether it is tempered or not. So I figured I could make a tank about 76''x24''x24'' or maybe even wider. Is this glass thick enough?
you can gow a little wider and taller as the window only needs framed, it doesn't have to match all of the edges. If that makes any sense. You can fill to 24" and still have a 2 inch gap above that a you don't want to fill to the top. filling at 24" has a 2.29 safety factor with imo is fairly safe with a supported window.
So does it matter if it is tempered or not? I will use 3/4" plywood and drylok to waterproof. The tank will be for my turtles so 24" is more than enough height. I am thinking 36" wide which makes it about 280 gallons.
it dosent need to be tempered mate, my 220 gallon is 36'' deep and the window is normal plate glass.
At 2ft deep 10ml is plenty thick enough too.
are you planning on an above tank basking area?
What I mean is if does happen to be tempered will it matter. I don't know yet if I will do a atba. I might just fill up the water to about 18" and make a pvc pipe structure and put sand/rocks on it.
the only issue you have to be worries about with tempered glass is impact shatter. If a something strike the glass with enough force the entire window will shatter unlike with regular glass where it will crack/fracture. Just take precautions and you should have no issues.
Was I high yesterday while typing? Holy cow! Not a bit of what I typed was remotely comprehensible. Not that I get high, I just apparently seem high while typing.
Let's see if i can fix it...
