Hello all,

I've got two fairly large python eels in my tank (in fact, I'm very proud b/c they've got some leftover from the same batch at my LFS months ago, and mine are now twice the size of those), and I'm wondering how much I should be feeding them. The larger of the two has a spinal injury and doesn't move around much, so I'm less concerned about his food requirements as they are fairly low due to his activity level.

The other has rapidly become one of my favorite fish due to its food begging. The second it smells me feeding the other fish, it swims up to the top of my aquarium like some kind of living pogo stick, and waits for me to feed it earthworms by hand. It is AWESOME.

So for an ~10'', nice thick eel, how many earthworms would you feed it a week? Right now she gets 3 a week, more or less one every other day. But with the way the eel sucks them down, I'm thinking maybe she deserves two a feeding. I try to buy medium-small earthworms, not nightcrawlers.

Much thanks!

As much as it'll eat in a sitting my smaller guys eat 1 worm a day or so my larger one eats upwards of 3 in a sitting. I cut my worms in half for ease of eating since I'm using Canadian crawlers. At one point my fire eels ate a doz crawlers a week easy and seem to go in starts and stops. I usually go with if they're hungry feed them.

Thanks! The guy at my LFS said that earthworms have a fairly high oil content, so I guess I was a bit concerned about overfeeding my fish something so oily.

I'll start giving her 2-3 worms a feeding, as she's not fully grown but would be pretty large by normal spiny eel standards.
