Can someone explain to me how a python works?

If your drain is lower than the water level of you tank, I would just use a hose & gravel cleaner to gravity siphon. Unless people live in Australia, they dont really appreciate how water wasteful the python is. (No offense to anyone). If your drain is not below the tanks water level, can you drain out the door/window onto the garden?

So does it create the syphon through the water coming out of the tap?

yep! it works great. after 6 years of doing waterchanges with a peace of tubing, i'll never go without a python

I've put quick disconnects on my pythons pump & the hose outlet, outside. I just let it drain on the grass or shrubs & when it's time to re-fill I just snap it on the faucet. No waste going on, water or time :headbang2. Unless it's just for a 20gal. tank water change, then I just use it normally.

When you live in Australia and washing a car or watering your lawn with a hose is illegal then it's considered wasting. We have to use buckets for washing cars. :(
