So i have a question for all the knowledgeable filter people out there...

I have a 200G tank that runs two 1500L filters, they are both at the moment setup as the diagram below shows. The only difference between the two is one connects to a UV sterilizer, while the other does not...

Now my question is, would it be considered a good or bad idea if i took everything out of the filter that is NOT connected to the UV filter and replaced it with all bio rings as the diagram below...

I was thinking if i went this route, i would probably add a thin filter pad in there just to catch any loose debris...

So yeah, basically my question is what do you all think of this idea? is it advisable and do you think it will help break down the bad parameters a little more?

Oh and before i forget... stocking is 1X 14"~ Fahaka, 1X Albino Pleco, 1X Yellow Lab Cichlid, so not too bad...

Thanks in advance for any help...

Sounds like a good idea.. Increasing the amount of material ammonia eating bacteria can grow on is definitely a good thing, especially since the design of those(while innovative) seems to skimp on Bio-media. Plus you could always put a sponge on the intake of that canister.

This is DFishFox, and I approve this message.
lol

I don't see anything wrong with it since you have another one running on the same tank, plus you run a UV sterilizer on the other one. A boost in nitrifying bacteria could only help, because the biggest con of a UV is that it kills the bb (beneficial bacteria) along with the bad stuff. Overall I do like the idea, I want to do something similar with my eheim.

Thanks for the quick replies you two... if any one else wants to pitch in their 0.2 cents feel free :)

Either way, at the moment it seems if i can get my lazy butt off the couch to goto fish street i may just re-setup one of my filters and see how it goes...

Does a boost in bacteria do more even if the ammonia and nitrites are already at 0 ? Just curious about the added benefit if any.

me personally would do 1/3 filter pad/polisher & sorts of the like and 2/3 (the rest) bio but all bio wouldnt be bad.

There are a number of added benefits to this setup, one of the biggest ones being stability. With the bb constantly getting killed off by the sterilizer, it also means that new bb is being produced constantly; this would happen regardless, but since their getting "sterilized" it means that it's happening faster than at the usual rate which in turn would provide a very healthy, very active colony; since it's always regenerating, thus allowing for the above mentioned stability. All in theory of course.

Oh, and no prob O.P :)
