ok so i have a nano with 200 songs and was using my home computer with itunes to put music on it BUT i just got a laptop and want to use it for itunes and my ipod. i just downloaded itunes to the laptop and was going to plug my ipod in but since the library has no songs will it erase my ipod???

so..............if i plug in a packed ipod to an empty itunes will it "update" and clear the ipod? or will it download the songs into itunes?

any input is welcome:grinno: :grinno:

You can change your iTunes settings so it does not automatically update.

But I don't know the answer to the rest.

You have to pay attention to the prompts that itunes will give you
once you plug in the ipod to the empty itunes. It could erase all the contents
of your ipod if you chose to update it. There is a setting like derpeder said to
turn that warning off.

so basically i have to re-download all the songs then, or risk losing all my songs?

Here is what I would do if you have windows.

Uninstall iTunes
Go into the control panel and make invisible folders visible
Plug the iPod in
Treat it like a disk and find the folder filled with all of the "F" subfolders
Move all of the "F" subfolders into a folder on your computer
Reset the iPod back to normal
Install iTunes
Add the folder you created to iTunes and all your music will reappear

I have done this several times to switch computers/iPods

Is that a way to get songs off the iPod and be able to burn them on a cd?

all of the data you remove will be encrypted but once you add it to iTunes it gets unincrypted, then you can burn the music through iTunes

PLEASE do not hold me accountable if you screw up and delete all of your music!
