I just picked up a 4" Gar and was told it came from Mexico

1 does Mexico even have Gars?
2 . It is extremely dark... id say the entire body is black except a grey stripe along each side of the body and the top of his tail. The rest of him is black.

What kind does it sound like? Def not long nose or Gator

I am thinking it might be a tropical gar but my camera sucks. Ill try to take a shot of him tonight

if it's from mexico then it's a tropical. could you pm me where you got it from? if it's from a supplier that is. pics would deff clear things up;)

Not from a supplier... a LFS

Only 3 or 4 pcs were dark/black the rest were just darker than normal Spotted Gars

If you need location etc... PM me:D

probably FL/spotted gars in all likelihood. if they are NATIVE mexico fish, then they would be tropical gars (gator is also possible, but you've apparently ruled that out). look at the Gar ID references in the pinned topic as you will find juveniles of all species in those threads.

photo will help ID quickly--

Sorry... I was busy last night but I will try to take some pics tonight of him

From the pics I seen of the Juvies, I think he looks most like a Spot/Florida but the color and slight pattern diff throws me off

Let me post some pics before I keep going...lol

maybe since its still young, the spots might be completely covering the body. it'll probably turn out to be a spotted when it gets bigger. the spots will spread out and show some brown.

This is what im thinking... just the location I was told and the color throw me off.

Okay here we go for an ID pls (sorry about the pics)

There is a few more, but Ill post them later.

Right now he is not eating anything... but very active. Trying to feed BloodWorms right now

Thanks

most likely Florida gar given these pics and the fish that are showing up all over the country at LFS and match the same size and general pattern.

don't feed them bloodworms, feed them small guppies. they will grow quickly and soon be able to take feeder rosies. once they are 6-8" start playing around with non-live foods. good luck--
