Hello--

It's been real hard to pursue the African cichlid hobby in Orange County, California because no LFS seem to stock unusual fish. They only want to stock what people buy the most. Makes sense to me, but what about hobbyist? Sure, they can order them for you and of course you can buy online, but what if there was a tropical fish store in OC that not only carried the household favorites, but also stocked the hard to find Africans and South Americans or other uncommon fish?

If there was such a store in OC, and their fish were quality and their prices were competitive for like fish, would you buy there?

Just doing a little homework--thanks!

What kind of a question is that? Who wouldn't!?!?!

Hell yeah. I looked for a dovii for over 10 years.

Really?? I see those guys all over in this area. My friend has a breeding pair that had their first batch at about 4". I think they are about 7" now.

What stores have you tried? I think there are a few very good stores in OC like Ocean Blue and 405 Tropical. They have the fish I was looking for (datnoids, bichirs, aros and peacock bass). They probably have some of the harder to find cichlids you're looking for too.

If you can't find them at those stores, just buy them from MFK members here. There's a ton of members in OC.

I don't understand what you're asking.

It seems to me you've just said, "if there was a better store to shop at, would you shop there?"

The answer to that one should be pretty obvious.

Don't forget about the real issue with that. Some of those rare and hard to find are expensive to get a hold of. Once you start looking at overhead and costs to pursue keeping and maintaining the shop, it become a lot tougher. That is why you see a lot of fish stores stick to the bread and butter stock.
