do soft shells really need a basking area? my lfs has one in one of their tanks and their is no basking area or heat lamp on the tank. will soft shells die faster with out them?

no they dont need it but yes they do use it. so it is one of those judgement calls. they usually will not bask until they are adults so you could probably get away with not having one for a while.

I disagree, mine are all quite young and they bask daily and here in LA, I see tons basking along side Sliders daily. I tend to think that basking is quite important to them, even as hatchlings

I have had mine since it was a hatchling and it dose come out to bask although he startles easy. A heat lamp close enough in shallow water will suffice. Min has climbed up 8 inches up the drift wood out of the water.

sorry to derail but which turtle can be fully aquatic with no basking area

Fly river turtles

besides those something under $100
