It was Fat Homer Fat Homer who put this seed of thought in my head when he started his thread regarding sticker collections. It took me back to my childhood when I used to collect picture cards which came with some teabag brands. There were dozens and dozens of these series but you'd have to be a huge tea drinker, or have friends and family collecting for you too, if you stood any chance of completing a set before they released a new set. Needless to say I ended up with several unfinished sets throughout my childhood. Over the years I lost them all.

And then his thread rekindled my enthusiasm regarding these old sets of cards so I did some digging on line. The cards started in 1958 and teabag companies stopped putting the cards in around 1991. I was delighted to discover that in 1960, seven years before I was born, they had a series detailing fish of the British Isles. Of course I had to have this set so the other day I ordered a full set of these 61 year old cards from a company who specialises in this sort of stuff. Today they finally came. There are 50 cards in the set, all neatly placed in protective plastic envelopes. On the reverse of each card are brief details regarding each fish. Most are freshwater coarse fish but there are some game fish too along with a few shore fish.

Below are pictures of the front and reverse of one pack. There are five packs in total. I'm thinking of framing them in some way and putting them on the wall in my fish room, i'm undecided yet. The quaintest thing about them is that on the backs of each card is an offer to buy a special album for them, the price for the album is 6d, which is the old pre-decimalisation currency which was abolished in 1971. They are certainly a trip down memory lane.

Those are kinda cool looking. If you are considering framing them, I would choose a frame that you like that would fit at least 10 cards and use glass for both the front and back so you can still view both sides of the cards. A black mat board would make them pop nicely for a display.

You also might want to consider speaking with a professional that does framing for a living as they may offer advice on how to seal the glass panes so no moisture or dust gets in between the panes. They might recommend a weather strip type of seal that may also include a desiccant so that it doesn't affect the cards.

All 50 cards placed together with small gaps in between each one wouldn't take up a lot of space. I could sandwich all 50 of them between two sheets of glass and run a thin bead of aquarium sealant around all four sides. Then put a wooden frame around and stain/paint it. If I wanted to look at the backs I could take it off the wall and turn it around. That's the type of thing i'd probably do.

You didn't mention the size of the cards but they appear to be business size cards. Maybe split them into 2 frames so they will be easier to handle when you want to view the descriptions?

The advantage to using a picture mat is it will keep the cards from sliding around and make the individual cards 'pop' a bit more.

Just be sure to use things that won't affect the cards over time such as yellowing or degrading the paper. I'm not sure if the fumes from aquarium sealant will affect the paper at all. It would be a shame to damage those oldies but goodies!

The cards look good! Love the older styled illustrations done on them...

Definitely looking forward to once they are framed ??

Having done something similar with the "Birds of the Northern Forest" series of cards that once came with packages of El Producto Clubhouse cigars that my dad chain-smoked when I was growing up...I would caution against the silicone idea. You will put them neatly and carefully in order, taking pains to keep them straight and level...then you apply the silicone...and in 5 minute,s or 3 days, or 6 weeks, at least one of them will slip out of place and drop down at some crazy angle and look like crap. You will then laboriously cut/scrape the silicone away to correct the problem, breaking the glass in the process, cutting yourself and bleeding on a few of the most irreplaceable cards, and generally making a huge mess. You will then repeat the entire process a couple of times before giving up...yeah, it took me a couple of tries to learn my lesson...:)

I eventually just glued them to a dark background and put them behind glass in a standard picture frame, giving up on any idea of seeing the back of the cards...which were now decorated with dried blood and not too attractive in any case...

Hang on, let me see if I have this right. I've just bought a set of boring fish cards, and all along I could have got a set of cards with scantily clad females from the northern forests of Canada!! I'm not surprised you made an arse of the framing job. You should have been concentrating on the job instead of gawping at the cards, lol.

Dang...I keep forgetting that the English don't speak English...:)

I particularly remember the card with the Great Grey Owl. That bird had the biggest, roundest, most beautiful...eyes...
