It was
Fat Homer
who put this seed of thought in my head when he started his thread regarding sticker collections. It took me back to my childhood when I used to collect picture cards which came with some teabag brands. There were dozens and dozens of these series but you'd have to be a huge tea drinker, or have friends and family collecting for you too, if you stood any chance of completing a set before they released a new set. Needless to say I ended up with several unfinished sets throughout my childhood. Over the years I lost them all.
And then his thread rekindled my enthusiasm regarding these old sets of cards so I did some digging on line. The cards started in 1958 and teabag companies stopped putting the cards in around 1991. I was delighted to discover that in 1960, seven years before I was born, they had a series detailing fish of the British Isles. Of course I had to have this set so the other day I ordered a full set of these 61 year old cards from a company who specialises in this sort of stuff. Today they finally came. There are 50 cards in the set, all neatly placed in protective plastic envelopes. On the reverse of each card are brief details regarding each fish. Most are freshwater coarse fish but there are some game fish too along with a few shore fish.
Below are pictures of the front and reverse of one pack. There are five packs in total. I'm thinking of framing them in some way and putting them on the wall in my fish room, i'm undecided yet. The quaintest thing about them is that on the backs of each card is an offer to buy a special album for them, the price for the album is 6d, which is the old pre-decimalisation currency which was abolished in 1971. They are certainly a trip down memory lane.
