Hi everyone. I've been raising fish for about 30 years and have never used a quarantine or hospital tank. I guess I'm lucky that the
biggest problems that I've ever had was ick. I've always have treated the whole tank but I wonder how someone sets-up a quarantine tank for new fish or a quarantine tank for sick fish. Do you have a smaller tank set-up constantly running with cycled water? That's alot of electricity running an empty tank. I'm guessing that for a quarantine tank, I would take some water from my current tank to fill the quarantine tank with cycled water and re-fill the current tank with some water a couple of days before getting the new fish. But, what about a hospital tank? Where do you get the water to set-up the hospital tank? I would not like to.use the water frome the tank (especially with ick) so what do you do? Like I said, with ick, I treat the whole tank, but how would you treat one or a couple of.fish with a hospital tank with clean, cycled water. I hope this isn't too confusing. Thanks in advance, Ed.

You pretty well summed it up.

If I'm treating ick in an established tank: I'll treat the whole tank.

If I'm introducing new fish: I'll use cycled water and a piece of media to seed the un-cycled filter on the hospital tank.

If I'm treating a sick or injured fish: "read above"... because you risk putting the fish into shock with "fresh water". IMO. However I do add fresh water slowly over time.
