Hi I am going to a fish auction next week I have a 20 gallon quarantine tank set up just wanted to know how long I should keep the fish in there and how do I know the fish are not sick before I put them in my show tank?

I use to ask this and I was always told for best result to keep them in there for a month. I always thought this was way to long so I didn't listen I would do it for 1 week or 2 weeks but then I had an out break in my tanks which made me lose half my stock at the time. Now I wait the month. It's always better to be safe then sorry. Some parasites can lay dormant for awhile or remain present on the fish and with the move and stress they become more able to infect the fish. Ich has always been my curse and is why I do the month long wait. It's easy to see a fish heavily infested but one that is lightly covered specially if it first gets them on say a dull whitish area like the belly first is harder to see and sometimes missed.
