quarantine tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I usually put salt in my quarantine.

prazipro is widely used.
depending on if you know of parasites, metronozidole.
i personally find melafix and the other meds of this brand group to be horrible wastes of money that do no real good.

I would just go with salt and higher temp just to prevent what it might be carrying. Melafix would work as well. Just keep it well aerated but also make sure whatever fish you're qting isn't extremely sensitive to salt.

I practice prazipro in my qt as well. before I only did one week treatment, but now I've switched to 2. A flowerhorn I own had major worms that manifested a few months after I treated tank. I only prazi him one week during qt that time, I've learnt my lesson. I'd follow up with fungus guard by tetra.

I guess in paranoid now. Since my communities have been established awhile and I'd be devastated if it crashed.

I don't trust melafix either, never really worked for me. On the positive side, it did give my room a nice minty aroma.

Good luck.

How do you guys go about setting it up I mean do you leave it running ? Or only have it running when your actually using it ? I was always confused about quarantine tanks because of them not being cycled if just setting it up each time you need to use it

hello; I keep a couple of small fish in a QT at times. I also keep a population of ramshorn snails and free floating hornwort plants. My thinking is the fish and snails will maintain a population of the beneficial bacteria (bb) over time.

I also tend to puit a bit of extra food in the QT. This helps keep up the snail population and decay of the extra food should produce some ammonia on it's own to feed the bb.

I also am careful as to the number of newly purchased fish I put into the QT at any one time. This limits my purchases of new fish generally to every three to four weeks.

good luck

For me, I don't keep it up all the time. I keep extra sponge filters in my tank/sumps. I just transfer that over to the qt when I need to. I lack self control and would probably end up decorating it and buying permanent stock for qt.
