How long should I quarantine a new fish for?
Well that is kind of a loaded question. Id say at minimum a week to 10 days. During that time look for any signs of illness if found treat accordingly, ensure the fish is healthy, feeding and acting normal. If its wild caught you may want/need to go longer. If its wild caught a anti parasitic med should/could be administered profalcticaly, wild caught should probably be a min of 3 weeks. If you see signs of ich you need to wait at least 6 weeks. Obviously this all is a matter of oppinion. I have put fish right in my aquarium before is that a good procedure?.....no not really. I'm lucky my lfs qts all new fish for at least a week before they hit the floor. I trust them but have had issues with new fish also, not often but I have brought in ich at least once and a fish that had worms. So even if they qt its still possible. I guess I should say ive been a customer/employee of that store for over 20 years.

There’s no set in stone practice. Do what’s comfortable to you. Keeping fish for 2 months in quarantine is what I do and I’m ok with the risks.

For me it depends on what’s at stake if I will quarantine a fish or not. If it’s going in with my big fish that I’ve had for a long time it gets quarantined. If it’s wild caught it definitely gets quarantined and medicated. It it’s a tetra or shrimp it goes right in my community tank. I have lost expensive fish before due to not quaranting. Once that happens to you, you will understand why people go for though a long qt process. I don’t care if it’s from a trusty lfs or a friends tank. If it’s going in my tank that I have a lot invested into it’s getting quarantined.

I believe RD. RD. Made a point I had not thought of before (pretty common occurrence actually but that's another story) that quarantining also was to protect the new fish from things that could harm it that the established denizens were accustomed to

A friend who runs a public aquatics exhibit quarantines each fish for 6 months.
I try to go at least 3 months.
Many diseases do not become apparent in a short time, some like ick are usually almost immediate, but it's fairly easy to work with.
Its tha bacterial diseases that aren't so obvious, and not as easily dealt with.
I had some Mayaheros beanii that arrived with colomnaris, it took almost 3 months for it to become obvious as to why it was , and they all died at about the 2 to 3 month mark, if I had put them in the main tank, I believe every fish in the tank would have died.

Aquarium co-op has a good plan and there is a video on you tube.

Works for me.
