The Crunch
Hi, just after some detailed 1st hand info on breeding jack dempseys. My two are both still young whipper snappers but have started exhibiting some suspicously adult like breeding behaviour.. They are currently housed in a 6x1.5x1.8 with my pair of oscars, 5 clown loaches, 1 albino common plec, one small sailfin, 3 medium size bristlenoses and a few fugitive baby cons.. since we put our male jd (3 inches) back in the tank, him and the female (4 inches) first beat each other mercilessly from one end of the tank to the other and now have solved their differences and started cooperating to dig trenches everywhere.. they have both gone from being pretty well coloured to now nearly solid black with minimum intense speckling and take turns watching each other attack their reflections etc.. is this jd breeding behaviour? or are they just bored teenagers changing colours and digging up my tank to rebel? seriously though no eggs yet after roughly a week tho i heard plecos eat eggs at night..

That sounds like lovin to me ;) I have yet to have a plec beat my JD's or cons out of their eggs ;) Give it some time .. You are very close to having a spawn ;)

What decor is in the tank?

I will post a full tank shot when i can find it but there is a laying down tree-like driftwood coming out of the back left corner, another standing in the front right (that's where the magic is happening), a green rock in back right (not very flat), a man-made orange rock arch with holes on back wall and two half logs along the front. also once i saw them digging i put a small flat rock in the front right corner.. can't wait, had baby cons and rustys but no babys as cool as jds

Awesome! Cannot wait to hear the progress.. If they get shy... And don;t lay.. Drop a cheap flower pot in kinda aimed away from Direct view..

Wow thats fast just got home and turns out they've already had the babies, under a rock ledge and both furiously defending against the oscars :headbang2
thanks for the help.. will no doubt be posting a thread soon with progress

lol, that's how to breed Dempseys... watch... and wait... done!
