What is the difference between the 2 species? I have a fish that was sold to me as a "Red Throat Midas". I'm not sure exactly what the difference in the 2 are as it's been a while since I saw an Amarillo. Anyone have comparison photos?

very good question. with all the different "midas" types out there if you didnt get it from a reputable vendor then youll never know cause all the "midas" types look so similar

I already have and if you look at the descriptions, sometimes it's not always the fish in the picture. The fish I have looks like a typical barred Midas, but has a blue sheen to it, red tipped dorsal fin and a little red in the edges of the caudal, dorsal and anal fins.
I know, it is not easy. You have the barred Midas, the Hoga, the amarillo, all have similar body types. My Amarillos both males were a blueish color also. The best you can do is research.

Without some kind of provenance there's no telling with any certainty what the genetics of your fish are. No amount of photos is going to help, anymore than they would when attempting to differentiate between a "midas" and a "red devil". These are nothing more than common trade names used by the tropical fish industry, not by local collectors, and not by ichthyologists. The use of common names is a BIG problem in the cichlid hobby, especially within the midas complex.
